Zero

The Mitsubishi Zero was a very advanced aircraft when first seen over China prior to the war.  It was so advanced that it easily out performed our front line naval fighter of the day, the Grumman F4F Wildcat.  The zero was light, fast and could out climb the Grummans.  It did have two weaknesses - it was never able to overcome its lack of armor for the pilot and it did not have self sealing fuel tanks.
