Sopwith Triplane

Many believe the Fokker DR-1 was the first triplane to see successful service in World War I, but the fact remains it was the Sopwith triplane that started it all.  The Sopwith's reason for three wings was that the pilots wanted better visibility than what was offered by the Sopwith Pup.  Sopwith engineers came up with a design that reduced the wing chord, added a third wing to make up for the wing area loss, and got an airplane with better visibility yet maintained performance.
