P-51 Mustang

Illustrated in profile is the famous North American P-51 Mustang.  This was the fighter that made possible long bombing missions by B-17s into the heart of Germany.  The P-51 could carry the fuel needed to handle the long flight hours, while previous fighters were unable to carry the fuel to provide escort.
