Piper L-4B The original Piper J-3 cub had been flying and teaching new student pilots the joy of flying since the late 1930s. During the war games of the Louisiana Maneuvers, it was suggested by Eisenhower and Patton (both pilots) that the army needed a small liaison type aircraft in their inventory. To make a long story short, the Piper Cub was a brilliant success and the Army placed a major order for what, from that moment on, we would call an L-4, or Grasshopper. The L-4 was the most widely produced of all U. S. liaison type aircraft used during the war. Order Number 003 |
